The ATSB is investigating the collision between a truck and a freight train at Gooray, Queensland on 23 May 2024.
At about 1330 local time, a loaded Watco grain train 6839 collided with a truck on the Gooray Road level crossing. This was a passive level crossing controlled with stop signs for approaching road traffic. The collision resulted in the derailment of two locomotives and 14 trailing wagons from the train. The train locomotives, and the prime mover and low-loader trailer of the truck, were substantially damaged. The train crew and the truck driver sustained serious injuries.
The final report has been drafted and is undergoing internal review to ensure the report adequately and accurately reflects the evidence collected, analysis, and agreed findings.
The final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
