The ATSB is investigating a runway incursion involving Beechcraft A36, registered VH-CKX, and Fairchild SA226, registered VH-KGX, at Geraldton Airport, Western Australia on 19 March 2024.

The crew of VH-CKX backtracked along runway 14 while the crew of VH-KGX backtracked runway 03. Both aircraft were aware of each other and were encountering communications difficulties with a third aircraft relaying calls. VH-CKX made a radio call and commenced take-off on runway 14 while VH-KGX commenced take-off on runway 03. The crew of VH-CKX observed VH-KGX on the crossing runway and delayed rotation to pass behind the aircraft.

The final report has been drafted and is undergoing internal review to ensure the report adequately and accurately reflects the evidence collected, analysis, and agreed findings.

The final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
