Safety issue

The remoteness of much of the Northern Territory rail corridor
and the local climatic conditions could make a timely response to
an accident challenging in some circumstances, particularly in the
wet season.

Action taken

Northern Territory Rail Safety Committee coordinated a desktop
emergency exercise in 2006 and an emergency field exercise of a
simulated level crossing accident at Alice Springs in early
2007.

Safety Advisory Notice

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau recommends that the
Northern Territory Department of Planning and Infrastructure takes
action to address this safety issue.
