"Investigation into Ansett Australia maintenance safety
deficiencies and the control of continuing airworthiness of Class A
aircraft".

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau recommends that the Civil
Aviation Safety Authority review relevant Australian civil aviation
legislation and regulations to ensure that operators of Class A
aircraft are required to have an acceptable system for receiving,
assessing and actioning safety-related service documentation, in
accordance with ICAO Annex 6, Part I, paragraph 8.5.2.

The Authority acknowledges the intent of this Recommendation. It
is anticipated that the suite of Maintenance Regulations, planned
to be introduced in mid-2003, will provide this outcome. Notices of
Proposed Rule Making for these Regulations were released for public
comment in January 2002. Responses are being considered.

ATSB Response

The ATSB will continue to monitor the implementation of CASA's
proposed safety action.

On 13 April 2004, CASA commenced Project CS 04/03 -
Review/Amend CASR Parts 21-35 Airworthiness Standards.
CASR Part 25 relates to aeroplanes in the transport category.
