The ATSB is investigating the collision with terrain of a Robinson R22 Beta helicopter, VH‑8BW, at Pannikin Island, Queensland, on 26 February 2025.
During low-level training operations, the helicopter encountered a gust of wind and subsequently the crew lost control of the helicopter which collided with terrain. The 2 occupants sustained minor injuries.
The evidence collection phase of the ATSB investigation will involve interviewing involved parties and gathering information from any recorded data, examining operator procedures and maintenance records.
A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
