The ATSB is investigating a visual flight rules (VFR) aircraft entering instrument flight conditions involving a Piper Aircraft PA-28-181, registered VH-BTN, near Bankstown Airport, New South Wales on 15 January 2025.
During cruise, the aircraft entered IMC and the pilot requested navigational assistance from air traffic control. The pilot returned the aircraft to Bankstown.
The evidence collection phase of the investigation will involve interviewing involved parties, reviewing operator procedures, reviewing recorded data, and the collection of other relevant information.
A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
