The ATSB is investigating a collision between a road train and the Ghan passenger train at a level crossing 50 km north of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, on 15 September 2024.
At about 0953 local time, a road train collided with the 2nd locomotive of the Ghan passenger train at a road level crossing. This was a passive level crossing controlled with a stop sign for approaching road traffic. The train and prime mover were both damaged, and the road train driver sustained injuries. There were no injuries to train crew or passengers.
The evidence collection phase of the investigation will involve interviewing witnesses and involved parties, reviewing recorded data, and the collection of other relevant evidence.
Should a critical safety issue be identified during the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken. A final report will be published at the conclusion of the investigation.
