The ATSB is investigating an engine malfunction involving Airbus A330-202, VH-EBQ, 1,828 km west-south-west of Los Angeles International Airport, United States of America on 4 December 2024.

Initial reports indicate that during cruise, sparks were observed from the no 2 engine, and the crew decided to return to Los Angeles. During approach, a bang was heard, and the crew detected no 2 engine stall indications. The engine remained at idle for the remainder of the flight. The post-flight inspection revealed evidence of metal in the tail pipe of the no 2 engine.

The evidence collection phase of the investigation will involve interviewing involved parties, examination of maintenance records, retrieving and reviewing recorded data, and the collection of other relevant information.

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
