The ATSB is investigating a visual flight rules (VFR) aircraft entering instrument flight conditions involving a Piper Aircraft PA-28-181, registered VH-BTN, near Bankstown Airport, New South Wales on 15 January 2025.

During cruise, the aircraft entered IMC and the pilot requested navigational assistance from air traffic control. The pilot returned the aircraft to Bankstown.

The ATSB has commenced the examination and analysis of the initial evidence collected.

To date, the ATSB investigation has included interviewing involved parties, reviewing the operator exposition, and reviewing recorded data.

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
