On 2 January 2023 the ATSB commenced an investigation (AO-2023-001) into a mid-air collision involving two Eurocopter EC130B4 helicopters, VH-XH9 and VH-XKQ at Main Beach, Gold Coast, Queensland.
The ATSB identified that a cockpit visibility study was required to identify what limitations or opportunities the pilots had to visually detect and avoid the other aircraft. The study is examining visibility of both aircraft from the point of view of each pilot and study what influence flight path, visual performance, aircraft structure and cabin configuration may have had.
The ATSB has developed a 3-dimensional (3D) model of an EC130B4, and collected and reviewed relevant data relating to environment, flight crew, and flight paths of the helicopters. Through this process the ATSB has carried out complex recovery and analysis of recorded data from both aircraft. The process to ensure that the analysis and final product is as accurate as possible will extend the end date of this study.
Further investigation also includes review of literature related to human visual performance and review of aircraft conspicuity equipment and its specifications. In parallel and within the scope of this study, the ATSB is finalising work with our counterparts and simulation experts overseas in the development of 3D flight path models and visualisations to better explain and understand the event.
